Asthma

Asthma is a chronic disease of the airway that makes breathing difficult.  With asthma, there is inflammation of the air passages that result in a temporary narrowing of the airways that carry oxygen to the lungs.  This results in asthma symptoms, including coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.  With proper treatment you can live well with this health condition.  Poor control can severely limit your ability to be active.  Asthma affects 22 million Americans and may occur at any age, although it is more common in younger individuals.

Having a family history of asthma may increase your risk.  Allergies and asthma often occur together.  Smoking with asthma is a dangerous combination.

If you think you may have asthma, schedule an appointment.  One of our providers will take a history, do an examination and may do a pulmonary function test (PFT) to measure how well your lungs are performing.  It is a quick test done in our office that will help us determine if medication is needed.
