Anxiety disorders frequently occur and if not recognized can cause dysfunction and can often have consequences. It is sometimes hard, as a parent to be able to differentiate between normal childhood or teen behavior and that which constitutes a disorder. Below is some information on various anxiety disorders.
ANXIETY DISORDERS: While it is appropriate to feel anxious with stress, there are many of our children and teens who have true anxiety disorders. Please contact your health professional for more information.
GAD (generalized anxiety Disorder) the worrier. Worries to excess, above what would be normal for age about safety of self or loved ones, fears, over thinks to the disruption of their own as well as families life.
OCD (Obsessive Compulsive) Obsessive thinking, intrusive thoughts that produce fear and anxious feelings with repetitive behaviors to try to reduce those fears. Could be counting, organizing, frequent hand washing or checking of things. Preoccupied by a specific topic to the point of distraction. And all this interferes with person and/or family's normal function.
PANIC Severe anxiety attacks that come unprovoked for no reason, even out of sleep, so severe as to affect function. Feelings like heart palpating, shortness of breath and a feeling of flight. The first attack is usually bad enough remember the event to cause fear that it will happen again.
SOCIAL PHOBIA: a fear far above expected to speak or participate in public, sometimes even fear of new situations, leaving home, public eating or restrooms, avoids crowds or public and prefers to stay at home to the point of impaired function.
RESEARCH CENTER FOR VARIOUS DISORDERS
At Ericksen Research and Westside Medical we conduct clinical trials for treatment of many disorders. Some of the medications are well proven treatment options that are being studied for new indications like use in children. Some are new breakthroughs on medical treatment. If a person qualifies for a study where one of the disorders is being treated, they have a very extensive diagnostic work up by a licensed Psychologist, while ruling out other associated disorders. The testing and treatment which otherwise may be very expensive, is available at no charge and in fact there is financial compensation for time taken. The quality of treatment meets or exceeds the normal clinical experience.
Currently we have some openings for research patients in the following areas for ages 12-17.
(At a later date we will be seeing 7-11 year olds - call to get on the list)
Depression, ADHD, Bipolar (age 10-17) and Autism
